What is Closed Fracture?

A closed fracture is a broken bone that does not leave the skin intact.

The skin is not exposed to air.

  • A closed fracture may still require surgery,

but this is not as urgent as a simple fracture and can be treated within days or weeks of the injury.

  • A closed fracture can still cause severe soft tissue injury.
  • A closed fracture occurs when excessive force is applied to a bone.

For example, a bone may be twisted, jarred or bent when:

  1. A fall or motor vehicle accident occurs. A football or soccer tackle can cause a closed fracture if the bone is exposed to the air and the skin is not intact.
  2. A fracture can also be caused by osteoporosis, which weakens bones.
  • A repetitive motion can tire muscles and place more force on the bone.

For example, a running injury can cause a stress fracture in the foot, ankle or tibia.

A closed wrist fracture can be treated using a cast to hold healing bones in the correct position.
