What is Open Fracture?

An open fracture also called a compound fracture.

It is a bone fracture with an open wound on the skin near the fracture.

The skin wound is located at a site that is not directly over the fracture.

An open fracture occurs when the soft tissue and/or the hematoma of the bone are exposed to the environment due to a traumatic injury.

  • Types of open fractures include:

Type I: An open fracture with a wound that is less than 1 cm long and clean.

Type II: An open fracture that has a laceration that is more than 1 cm long

But does not cause extensive soft tissue damage, flaps or avulsions.

  1. Open fractures are commonly caused by high-energy accidents, such as
  • Motor vehicle collisions.

      2. Lower-energy incidents, such as

  • Simple falls at home
  • Injuries sustained playing sports
  • High-impact trauma
  • Falling from a height
  • Direct blows
  • Child abuse.

       3.Repetitive forces, such as

  • Running.

       4. Diseases that weaken the bone, e.g.

  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer in the bones.

Patients with open fractures often suffer additional injuries to other areas of the body.
